A Salute to Service Helps to Heal

151/5/93

Working on POW and MIA issues, Amb. Quinn was granted many opportunities to travel alongside General Vessey to Vietnam and the surrounding areas. On one occasion, Senator John McCain joined them to oversee their operation. This would be one of Senator McCain’s first trips back to Vietnam, where he had been held captive for nearly six years after being shot down during the war. Amb. Quinn wasn’t sure how Senator McCain would react to being back in a place that harbored such negative memories. But after touring Hanoi for some time, they came upon monument for Senator McCain where a subtle inconsistency helped bring light to an otherwise dark location.
