In addition to the significant impact on both the Kennedy and Bush political dynasties in the 1980 Iowa caucuses, Amb. Quinn describes how a third political dynasty was affected by Iowa in October of that year. That political dynasty was of the Xi family from China. In October, a delegation of Chinese governors paid a visit to Iowa as part of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. Amb. Quinn describes how he escorted the delegation around the state, including on a visit to the Amana Colonies, led by Governor Xi Zhongxun, the father of current Chinese President Xi Jinping. Amb. Quinn reveals how that visit to Amana appears to have impacted both Chinese agriculture and politics for decades to come.
