Leaving America for the first time in his life, Amb. Quinn describes his stopovers in Japan, Taiwan and colonial Hong Kong before traveling on to the warzone in Vietnam. Landing in Saigon, he lends his gun to fellow Foreign Service Officer Alvin Adams, starting a lifelong friendship. He then flies to the Mekong Delta in southernmost Vietnam where he begins his assignment as a rural development officer in Sa Dec Province.
