Amb Quinn describes how when the Vietcong overrun a South Vietnamese Army outpost in Duc Ton, radio contact is lost and there is no one who can guide the U.S. Army Medical Evacuation Helicopter to land and pick up the wounded. He tells the pilot of the “dust off” medevac helicopter to land at his compound so that he can board it. Using only moonlight, he guides the pilots down a canal flying just a few feet off the water toward a potentially “Hot LZ (landing zone)” controlled by the enemy, and have to decide whether to risk the landing.
