Evacuating Mormon Missionaries and a Cambodian-American During a Civil War

187/7/97

Amb. Quinn describes how in 1997 during the height of the Cambodian civil war, he got two calls early one morning. One was from Senator Bob Kerrey, notifying him that there were Mormon missionaries caught in the fighting; the other was from Cambodian-American Lu Lay Sreng telling Amb. Quinn that he has been trapped and may be soon killed. Amb. Quinn tried to assess both situations quickly and devised a plan. He got in his ambassadorial vehicle and drove toward the location near the trapped Mormon missionaries. Amb. Quinn pulled up to the building with the missionaries and helped make plans to get them evacuated as soon as possible. Then he tried to locate Lu Lay Sreng for hours, but he is unsuccessful and feared the worst may have happened.
