Amb. Quinn recounts how his first job in May 1964, after graduating from Loras College in Dubuque, Iowa, was working in the Hide House of the Dubuque Packing Company, the place to which the skins of cattle were brought after being stripped off the carcass of the newly slaughtered animal. It was the dirtiest and hardest job at the packing company. Ten years later, exactly to the month, he walks into the White House to begin his NSC assignment.
