Amb. Quinn details the visit to China by Secretary of State George Shultz, along with the special gestures the Chinese government made to welcome him and his party. At the end of the trip, Secretary Shultz hosts a dinner for all of the American staff that worked on planning and implementing his visit. Sitting next to the American ambassador to China, whom he was meeting for the first time, Amb. Quinn describes their conversation, which would eventually lead to his being nominated to be an ambassador himself.
