My Journey to Becoming a Foreign Service Officer

In 1964, foregoing his dreams of law school, Amb. Quinn drove to Madison, Wisconsin to take the State Department Foreign Service entrance exam. Having passed both the written test and the oral interview, his expectation of a diplomatic life was suddenly stymied by an unpredicted medical problem. A negative year-long assessment by the top specialists in America seemingly ended his hope for a career in foreign affairs before it even got started.
