Amb. Quinn describes how he met his wife Le Son at a Canadian diplomatic soiree. Seeing an attractive young woman “standing across the crowded room,” somewhat like the scene in South Pacific he goes over to introduce himself and chats with her in Vietnamese. Thinking he has made a strong first impression he later finds out that she described his Vietnamese as that of a “hick farm from the Delta” and a “country bumpkin.”
